Most moms probably experience mixed emotions upon realizing that their kids had grown up and will soon be leaving home for college. Michelle Obama is just such kind of mom as she admitted of crying when her youngest child Sasha left home for university.
“Were there any tears?” Michelle Obama was asked by former first daughter Jenna Bush during a Today Show episode. Sasha has left for the University of Michigan last year.
Michelle admitted that she actually cried but tried to hide it since she didn’t want Sasha to get embarrassed. “There were,” Mrs. Obama responded. “We were really good about it- we didn’t want to embarrass her because, you know, she had roommates.”
“When we got into a car…and then Sasha drove off on her own and said that last goodbye, that’s when we're like…” Michelle mimicked crying noises.
Mrs. Obama is proud to see her girls grow into independent women. However, she also expressed a certain kind of sadness that probably happens to parents when they realize that their children are already grown up.
“I’m excited for my girls to grow up and become independent, but you feel a little melancholy that they will never be the little ones that sit on your lap and listen to your every word and look at you adoringly,” Michelle added. “Those days are over.”
Meanwhile, some of Sasha’s fellow students at the University of Michigan were surprised to see former President Barack Obama’s daughter amongst them. “I was walking by pushing a vacuum and she walked out right in front of me,” third-year film student Zach Lassen said, according to The Detroit News. “I said, 'Excuse me.' It was a crowded hallway with her and some Secret Service dudes.”
Many were happy that Sasha decided to attend the University of Michigan. “I think it's cool that even though her family went to Ivy League schools, she decided that UM was the caliber high enough to match that of an Ivy League school,” sophomore Jessica Brinser said.
“We hope she finds her fit here just like we all have,” Brinser added. “We all love it here. We hope she does, too.”
